The main area of Professor Sofia’s research is stellar structure and evolution including rotation, magnetic fields and advanced models of convection. Specifically, he applies these models to understand solar variability which may have terrestrial consequences. These studies are primarily theoretical, but he also works on a related experiment called the Solar Disk Sextant (SDS) whose purpose is to measure the shape and size of the Sun, and their variations, as diagnostics of internal processes.
