Deriving Local Climate Information from Global Models

A farmer in the central USA and a fisherman in Maine will not experience global warming in the same way.  Dynamic interactions between cities, deserts, and forests mean that a rise in the global mean temperature doesn’t imply uniform warming of the planet.  As climate change advances, wind patterns and ocean currents will shift; the sea may swell in some places, while rivers run dry in others.  Global climate models make predictions on too broad a scale to recognize many of these effects, leaving policy makers unable to prepare their communities.  

Impacts of Aerosols on Arctic Mixed-Phase Boundary Clouds During M-PACE and ISDAC Field Campaigns: Implications for Modelling Studies

Comprehensive data on arctic boundary layer aerosol and cloud microphysical and radiative properties were collected during the 2004 Mixed-Phase Arctic Cloud Experiment (M-PACE) and the 2008 Indirect and Semi-Direct Aerosol Campaign (ISDAC). During M-PACE, the University of North Dakota Citation executed spiral ascents and descents through 27 mixed-phase clouds on 7 separate days over ground-based remote sensing sites at Barrow and Oliktok Point, Alaska.

Even before the climate negotiations began this week, Typhoon Haiyan sent a message to the world – a message that is still making waves. The strength and trajectory of Typhoon Haiyan was unprecedented, even for the Philippines, an island nation that experiences more disasters than most. In response, the lead Filipino negotiator declared a fast for the duration of the climate negotiations until progress has been made to “stop this madness.”
